Gravity (2013)

So I went to see Gravity a few weeks ago and I thought an appropriate way of getting underway with this blog would be to write about it. Obviously if I'd had the idea to start blogging sooner, this review would've come when the film was still fresh in my mind. Never mind.

In the weeks leading up to its release, the hype for Gravity was certainly drawing me in. Beside the fact that it starred George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, both of whom I love. I was also captivated by the simplistic advertising campaign that I was becoming increasingly more aware of on my way to Manchester during the week via billboards, newspaper adverts etc.

I loved the simplicity of the images used in the campaign. From the announcement of the film, I was completely sold. The advertising campaign was just an added bonus. The film came out here in England (general release) on the 8th of November. And I went to see it that day.

The film itself is fantastic. The cinematography is stunning and Sandra Bullock gives probably her best performance ever (and she's given some excellent ones before). I was entirely immersed in the surroundings. I even felt so claustrophobic at one point that I felt like I couldn't breathe. True story. The overlying messages of the film are also excellently done, without being overly blatant. The concise running time of the film is another of its feat. It manages to combine thought provoking, well paced storytelling with a well managed running time. In summary, watch it.
